And so yesterday, all of Canada was filling out the census form so we would have a snapshot in time of how many of us there are and who we are. There is something awe-inspiring at having a group of people doing things either together or at the same time, be it in sports, class, military parade or filling a census form.
It seems to be the simple act of shared will and sense of purpose that is the kicker. The feeling is brought to a new level when caring and selflessness toward a goal is thrown into the mix.

Being a pessimist, I always thought the same "selflessness" and "shared goal" are what bring the human beings to the cruelest acts such as war :-)
I guess there's always flip side of the coin...
Intersting thought - I must say I never considered that. By selflessness, I mean service to others - surely a pure motive couldn't get you to kill someone. Maybe as a pretext...
The "service to others" or "selflessness" can be many different things if you actually put it in context. They are always very subjective.
One ultimate example could be the crusade.
Admittedly, I filled out my form under threat of a fine and possible jail time. So much for high ideals... Sigh.
