Friends

I am a packrat when it comes to friends: I keep the old ones. Even if we don’t see each other as often, they sit in my heart, undisturbed.
Though I am pretty good at discarding objects – I don’t attach too much sentimental value to them – people are something else. There’s this whole extra dimension that friends bring into my world. They make it bright, funny, fascinating. Of course, you can have too many friends – I suspect there is an ideal ratio at different times of your life. This theory will be tested over the next 50 years. Stay tuned.

I'm a packrat too, but have realized that sometimes, ya just gotta let go. :-)

There is something particularly wrenching when you realized you've finally lost touch with someone for good, after years of less and less frequent contact. Like there's a part of your heart or brain that was reserved just for them. When you realize that the contact is gone once and for all, the space you were holding for them is ashes, and disperses with a puff, leaving a tiny void.

I find it's something you can accept gracefully though, as it make room for new acquaintances - and what makes a suitable/fulfilling relationship continuously changes (if ever so slightly) as you grow over time.
